The harsh fluorescent light buzzes angrily as I stand beneath it, waiting on a seemingly interminable line in the coffee shop. Yet another boring Monday, and the line is full of sleepy mutterings and the protective squinching of eyes against the brightness.

“See, look here,” Ben pushes the map in front of Bjäkk. See the coordinates for that first storm, and the second…” he looks up at Bjäkk, “and the one two night’s ago. That’s not possible.”

Bjäkk gives Ben a suspicious gaze. “You are suggesting, that your sister,” he lifts his eyebrows with wonder, “that she is some kind of conductor for the weather.”

Sharp sounds of grass crunching underfoot like gravel. He took her by the hand; she was apprehensive, a little daunted. Staring up at the old rusted fence. He bent to pick her up and she giggled at this touch. Night was coming down slowly; the only illumination was from car headlights, rare on this road. Above them, a large signpost with the interior completely gone. “What was this place?” she murmured, as he hoisted her to the top of the fence and she began her climb.

All the while the princess slept, high in her tower, the castle crumbling around her, ivy pushing its tendrils through the stones, the walls crumbling into dust... In the forest the trees circle their branches around the bones of grinning princes. What has picked their skulls clean in the green-black darkness of the wood?

Shrip. Silence. She shook her head, holding the small wooden stick between her thumb and forefinger. She brought it together with the crushable cardboard container and drew the match across the striker once more. A small orange flame arose between her fingers and she smiled for one second before throwing it down and running as if the demons of hell were in hot pursuit.

[Current Mood |sadsad]

He sits, on the fallen tree, kicking at the dirt with his boots. Five hours now? Five hours that he has waited. But for what? He looks up, across the glade, at the sunlight that glistens and glitters on the pool. He listens to the insects and the birds. He waits. Where is she? Where are they?

...and slowly the realisation dawns on him. He's been stitched up, hasn't he? Stitched up, good and proper...?

I'm all for people being able to enjoy their retirement, but I don't expect them to. But why have I come here? Waiting was hard. Dinner was finished. Lights had been extinguished. The way he prodded, laughed ... be bar-be-qued. I sigh and then just shut the door in her face, because I was busy and didn't want to...
