Firestarter. [Apr. 29th, 2004|11:55 am]

Shrip. Silence. She shook her head, holding the small wooden stick between her thumb and forefinger. She brought it together with the crushable cardboard container and drew the match across the striker once more. In the darkness, Catherine stirred, waking from a thick, hot dream of tangled limbs and teeth. She lay in bed for a moment, heart beating hard. It was just a dream, she thought. No need to be alarmed. But all the same she felt on edge. Something was wrong, she knew it.

Pulling on her dressing gown, she headed downstairs. She got to the hall and reached for the light switch. Click. Nothing. The bulb must be out, she thought, but she could not shake her sense of unease.

The air thickened with the soft smell of smoke.
